Beethovenfest

Book now

Beethoven Overture to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s tragedy  Egmont , op. 84
Haydn Symphony no. 101 in D major
Beethoven Symphony no. 5 in C minor, op. 67

Ádám Fischer conductor

We’re delighted to be returning to Beethovenfest Bonn with conductor Ádám Fischer for a programme of Beethoven and Haydn.

When Haydn wrote his Symphony no. 101 he was at the pinnacle of his career. After serving for decades in Esterháza, he was now a figure of international stature: he wrote the final movements in Vienna and the opening movement during his triumphant second tour of England. At this time Beethoven was Haydn’s pupil. Strikingly, he tended to sidestep genres dominated by Haydn and only gradually found his way to the symphony. The  Egmont  Overture and the Fifth Symphony are two works from his middle period that travel ‘through darkness toward the light’ – a narrative pattern of the Age of Enlightenment.
