And a really inspirational talk it was too! twitter.com/HelenRichenda/…
It’s high summer. You might think it’s a quiet time for an orchestra. But not for us. Amidst our Glyndebourne, BBC Proms and The Night Shift performances, it’s also when we like to reveal our ‘look’ for our forthcoming Southbank Centre season.
In a departure from recent years, we already had an idea to start with, as all the concerts in 2017-18 are connected by a theme – Visions, Illusions and Delusions. Exploring ambiguity and certainty, curiosity and doubt, it’s the first of six season exploring the age of radical developments in science, arts and philosophy from which we take our name – the Enlightenment.
To match the theme, we started with the questions our players ask in the film trailer for the season. You’ll notice each of the ten concerts is paired with another by question. For example, we reckon “What is right and what is wrong?” is best answered by The Judas Passion and Bach’s St Matthew Passion. If you want to find out “Is love what you think it is?” (and we’re going to suggest that it’s not…), then come to Handel’s Semele and Der Rosenkavalier.
The visuals, too, are influenced by these questions. Each image depicts one of our players in a trance-like state, half way between dream and reality, holding props that represent the questions.
To make the brochure, we collaborated with designers LucienneRoberts+, who worked on the recent Wonder Materials: Graphene and Beyond exhibition at the Musuem of Science and Industry, Manchester. Angela Moore took the beautiful photographs.
